Very excited to announce that I passed the ASWB MSW Licensure Exam on Dec. 21st.
In my educational approach, I prioritize each student's self-determination to succeed. I recognize and value the diverse backgrounds, ages, lived experiences, and varying levels of existing knowledge that each student brings. Thus, my primary objective as an instructor is to empower them, ensuring that every voice is heard and respected in the learning process.
Empowerment Through Engagement: The journey toward empowerment begins with a collective effort to understand and appreciate each student's distinct aspirations, interests, and motivations. I strive to create a collaborative environment where students actively participate in shaping course policies and objectives. This approach validates their voice, developing a sense of belonging and community.
Empowerment Through Acquisition of Knowledge: Dynamic learning requires incorporating - but also transcending - conventional instructional strategies such as textbooks, lectures, guest speakers, and academic writing. It involves interactive digital components whereby students collaborate in teams to share insights on weekly coursework. Each team then develops a module summary to present virtually in a recording or in person while attending class.
Empowerment Through Critical Thought: Cultivating critical thinking involves promoting an environment where societal narratives and accepted truths are challenged. The learning process involves students conducting specific research to substantiate positions. Modules and assignments are designed to extend beyond content analysis and require research into the backgrounds and qualifications of authors of scholarly, peer-reviewed articles to foster a more profound comprehension of diverse perspectives. Classroom lectures utilize motivational interviewing techniques, challenging students to articulate multiple viewpoints to enhance cultural humility.
Empowerment Through Application: Experiential learning is a crucial component for students to understand and retain abstract concepts. Therefore, students are provided numerous opportunities to engage in diverse educational experiences beyond the conventional classroom so they may apply their knowledge in tangible ways. Assignments are geared toward applying classroom knowledge to real-world and current issues. Students are provided opportunities to engage in role-playing exercises, participate in community projects, and collaborate with organizations aligned with their interests and advocacies.
Empowerment Through Mentoring: Developing professional connections with students promotes mutual trust. My office’s ‘open door’ policy provides 1:1 mentoring sessions to encourage and support my students. It can also involve providing them with additional resources from the University or other community support services. Instructors do not just relay information. We engage and collaborate with humans; thus, a holistic approach to the person-in-environment is foundational. Therefore, I aim to be a facilitator by fostering autonomy, empathy, and self-reflection.
