Social Change

Human Behavior Theory

Theory - Advocacy

"Nothing changes if nothing changes!" This personal mantra also drives my dedication to defending and advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives for institutions of higher learning. Silence and apathy are unacceptable for all social workers.

Core Value:  Integrity and Service

Theory - Advocacy

Human Behavior Theory

Theory - Advocacy

Critical Theory examines and challenges the power structures and social norms perpetuating inequality. It encourages social workers to advocate for systemic change and equity. This approach is essential for advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, as it provides a framework for addressing and dismantling institutional barriers to equality.

Core Value: Social Justice

Choice Theory - Individual, Family, and Group Practice

Ecological Systems Theory describes human development within five interconnecting systems: microsystem (direct interactions), mesosystem (immediate influences), exosystem (indirect influences), macrosystem (cultural and societal norms), and chronosystem (temporal changes). This theory emphasizes that both immediate surroundings and broader societal factors influence development.

Core Value: Importance of Human Relationships

Choice Theory - Individual, Family, and Group Practice

Choice Theory - Individual, Family, and Group Practice

Choice Theory - Individual, Family, and Group Practice

Choice Theory, developed by William Glasser, emphasizes that all individuals have control over their choices and behaviors as they strive to meet their basic human needs, such as love, power, freedom, fun, and survival.

  • Individuals understand their choices and the consequences, empowering them to make decisions that satisfy their needs and enhance personal responsibility.
  • Family members understand each other's choices and needs, improving relationships and resolving conflicts.
  • Groups foster peer support and accountability.

Core Value: Dignity and Worth of the Person

Reality Therapy/Intervention

Choice Theory - Individual, Family, and Group Practice

Reality Therapy/Intervention

As a complement to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the Reality Therapy intervention centers on an individual's strengths. It encourages accepting and moving beyond the past while developing new personal and problem-solving skills. This approach equips individuals to make better choices, helping them achieve their goals and greater fulfillment.

  • Focus on the present
  • Emphasis on action and thinking
  • The WDEP System:  Wants, Doing (what is currently being done), Evaluation (whether current actions are effective), and Planning (developing a more effective behavior plan).
  • Commitment to action

Core Value: Competence

Life is messy, and people even messier! Theories are just that, theories...until an intervention leads to a practical application that manifests change.

Empowering others

Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) - volunteer

Took the initiative to support my classmates

  • Provided assistance and shared insights with incoming MSW students seeking guidance as they joined the program.
  • Offered research, academic writing, and professional presentation tips and techniques.
  • Assisted classmates with navigating the digital learning environment D2L (Desire2Learn) to improve proficiency with the online platform.
  • Attempted to be an agent of encouragement and motivation.
